Commission on Narcotic Drugs Meets to Discuss Scheduling of Cannabis
Cannabis Business Executives // 12.6.18 The Commission on Narcotic Drugs, the regulatory body that supervises the application and implementation of international drug control treaties and advises the United Nations on controlled substances, is responsible for amending drug treaties. The CND is currently gathered in Vienna Austria for a presentation of the Expert Committee on Drug Dependence’s recommendation about scheduling of CBD and cannabis. This is the final global meeting on cannabis before decisions being made at the UN’s highest-level Session on Drug Policy, scheduled for March 2019.

Former Mexican President Says Cannabis Industry Isn’t A Gold Rush

Business Insider // 12.5.18 Former Mexican President Vincente Fox warns cannabis industry investors against excessive optimism, telling investors that the market isn’t a gold rush. Fox went on to say that the nascent industry requires patience and must be forged over time. Fox now sits on the board of Canadian medical marijuana company Khiron Life Sciences (OTCMKTS: KHRNF).

Jay & Silent Bob Enter Cannabis Market

Nasdaq // 12.5.18 CFN Media Group announced the multiyear cannabis product development, licensing, and marketing agreement between Chemesis International Inc. (CSE: CSI) (OTC: CADMF) and the team of Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, better known as Jay and Silent Bob. The initial brand is called Jay and Silent Bob’s Private Stash. Chemesis is a vertically integrated cannabis company with established brands in California and Puerto Rico, with plans to expand throughout the US and Latin America.

Australian Cannabis Producer Plans Frankfurt Listing

Nasdaq // 12.5.18 Australian cannabis producer Little Green Pharma intends to list on the Frankfurt stock market to raise money for its European expansion campaign. Goldman Sachs and Deutsche Bank are guiding the initial public offering as global coordinators. Rumors speculate the offering may take place in the second quarter of 2019. This move makes Little Green Pharma the first cannabis producer to list in Germany.

California’s Bigger, Flashier Cannabis Market set to Outpace Canadian Market

Luxembourg Could Legalize Weed

The Spirits Business // 12.4.18 Luxembourg will be ushering in a new three-party coalition government, comprised of the Democratic Party, the Socialist Workers Party, and the Greens. The Consumer Choice Center announced that the coalition will legalize the recreational use of cannabis, making it the first country in the EU to pass such a motion.

Canada’s Wayland Group strikes medicinal marijuana deal in the Northern Territory

Australian Cannabis Bill Needs to be Properly Debated 

The Cannaberra Times // 12.3.18  Australian Capital Territory (ACT) is working to legalize small amounts of cannabis for personal use. Though Canberra, Australia’s capital, is considered one of the most progressive cities in Australia, many think the bill is too simple, and does not detail the specific laws relating to obtaining and regulating recreational cannabis. The topic will come to parliament next February.

President of Philippines Jokes About Using Cannabis 

Monday Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte jokingly said he used marijuana to stay awake at a recent regional meeting in. Duterte, whose controversial war on drugs has cost thousands of lives, took an open stance against medical cannabis in May 2018. Possession of marijuana in the Philippines is punishable by a long prison sentence and heavy fine.

New Zealand’s Hopeful for Cannabis Reform

With New Zealand’s coming cannabis legalization referendum, the Cannabis Referendum Coalition is trying to give the ‘yes’ campaign a respectable face in an attempt to rebrand public perception of cannabis.

First Patient in UK to Receive Medicinal Cannabis Prescription 

Carly Barton is believed to be the first person prescribed medicinal cannabis in the UK after it was legalized last month for patients with a prescription from a specialist. The NHS is not funding her treatment, which is £2,500 for a three month supply.

Thailand & South Korea Race Into Medicinal Cannabis

Thailand and South Korea are racing to establish a medicinal cannabis industry. Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly approved a bill that will permit cannabis for medicinal and research purposes. South Korea recently amended the Act on the Management of Narcotic Drugs, essentially legalizing medical marijuana.

Helius Therapeutics Poaching NZ Cannabis Strains

Medicinal cannabis firm Helius Therapeutics is asking black market cannabis growers to come out of the shadows and share their unique strains. The Misuse of Drugs Amendment Bill passed its second reading. The bill offers an amnesty program that allows illicit cannabis strains to be onboarded by licensed producers. Owners of the genetics will receive an upfront fee and a possible royalty for the rights to strains that are adopted.

Mexico Approves 38 Over the Counter CBD Products

Thirty-eight CBD products have been approved for sale without a prescription by the Mexican Federal Commission for the Protection Against Sanitary Risks. Seven companies – four from Mexico, two from the US, and one from Spain received approval for their products. The list of approved items includes 21 food supplements, 9 cosmetics products, 6 edibles or beverages, and 2 raw materials.

South Korea Legalizes CBD

After revising its drug policy on November 23rd, the Republic of Korea became the first East Asian country to legalize the import and distribution of CBD for medicinal purposes. The law will allow physicians to prescribe CBD for a variety of ailments including withdrawal from drugs and alcohol.

Massachusetts is working to correct this disparity by expunging previous cannabis conviction and by establishing a social equity program designed to prevent minorities from exclusion in the industry.

Thailand Legalizes Cannabis and Kratom for Medical Purposes Friday Thailand’s National Legislative Assembly unanimously accepted an amendment bill to legalize the production, import, and export of cannabis and kratom for medicinal purposes. The Office of Narcotics Control Board will regulate where cannabis can be cultivated and used under the draft amendment. North Sydney Pharmaceutical Plant Bought By Highlanders Cannabis Corp. North Sydney based Highlanders Cannabis Corp. purchased a Cape Breton pharmaceutical plant along with its assets with the intention of turning the site into a cannabis processing facility. Soon to be certified by Health Canada, the pharmaceutical plant aims to become the largest and most advanced legal manufacturer of cannabinoid-based products in the world. Researchers in India Developing Cannabis Derived Drug India’s Council of Scientific and Industrial Research received a license from the Jammu and Kashmir government to conduct research on cannabis derived drugs for the treatment of diseases like cancer, epilepsy, and sickle cell anemia. The council will meet with the Drug Controller General of India for approval for a human trial. Antigua and Barbuda Propose Medical Cannabis Bill Following consultations with Rastafarian communities, Antigua and Barbuda is set to legalize and regulate the production and supply of cannabis for religious and medical purposes. Though the Cannabis Bill of 2018 will regulate the production and supply of medical marijuana for patients and for religious purposes, the bill falls short of legalizing recreational cannabis. Mexico Permits CBD Products for Sale The head of the Mexican federal commission Cofepris, Julio Sanchez, has approved the first legal cannabidiol products for recreational use and sale at retailers and pharmacies across the country. The products made available include teas, drinks, and edibles with THC levels below 1%.
